We admit we were a bit skeptical about what to expect at the new Filene's Basement, which opened last week on Boylston Street. Although we've always had a soft spot for the original Downtown Crossing location and still treasure the memory of the red suede boots our parents bought us on a shopping trip to Boston in 5th grade, we've come to expect picked over clothing racks, tangled sweater bins and a somewhat limited supply of top labels. We're glad to say we were proven wrong upon our first visit to the newly opened locale. Within minutes of walking into the white-gloved doorman guarded door, we scooped up these top picks from some of our favorite designers.
Topped Off
An azure-toned silk blouse, $129.99, from See by Chloe, is the first we've owned from this luxe Paris fashion house. The label's designer Phoebe Philo, who resigned from her post early this year, knows a woman's shape, and this feminine top feels just right.
On the Spot
If rock stars can glam it up with Roberto Cavalli, why can't we? We found this irresistible leopard (the print-of-the-moment) party skirt. And while it's still a bit steep at $499, some animalistic urges are worth indulging.
Skirt Alert
A structured lady-like tweed skirt with gold embellishments is always classic and chic. Either simply stated with a cashmere sweater for work or paired with a sparkling top for a cocktail party, this Barneys New York find is nothing short of brilliant at $69.99.
Blue By You
The quest for stylish denim is never ending. We were thrilled to discover a pair we've coveted since last season for $79.99, almost half the original price. The pleasant surprise is that there are plenty of sizes and styles to choose from at Filene's Basement (including Blue Cult and Paper Denim & Cloth) so you don't have to settle for an unflattering fit.
Shoe In
We allow ourselves at least one shoe splurge each season (well, maybe two or three). Here, we found a luxe peep toe look featuring our favorite trend - leopard print - in a couture design by Donald J Pliner, $149.95. Prrrrrr.
