Fall fashion trends are ultra-wearable — from tailored shorts to layers of long, lean knits. Bling has dimmed and monochromatic schemes have moved in, but minimalism hasn’t taken over quite yet. Bags are big, belts are cinched, necklaces are worn in multiples, and we’re up to our ankles in boots that are ruched, slouched, and embellished with bows. getsugar hereby shares six of our favorite trends. So have a look, and get shopping — with just two more weeks ‘til September.
Frills & Flounce
All sorts of pieces sport a ruffle, tie or bow this season. Martha Hilfinger of Dress cites “chiffon blouses in subtle florals or polka dots” as a favorite. “They’re feminine but not fussy,” she says. We love the one pictured here, by 3.1 Philip Lim. Wear it now with fitted shorts (Banana Republic has a great pair), and later in the year under a untucked jacket, breezing about the hips. Browse Barneys for a multitude of blousy looks by designers like Geren Ford and Graham and Spencer.
The Cropped Jacket
“Cropped jackets are a staple this year, especially thrown on with jeans,” declares Elyse Weiner, sales associate at Stil. Reiss offers a black and ivory tweed version with a frill collar, shown belted at the waist. Pictured here is a velvet pinstripe jacket with grosgrain details and pleats, by design team Day Birger & Mikkelsen, new this season to Whim.
Skinny Denim
Designer denim still is going strong. This season it’s dark, skinny, and crisp. The pair here, by Siwy, provide a cool, cropped look, though the stylist at Intermix just pulled them up around the knees. AG Adriano Goldschmied offers the Posh, a version that’s actually cropped.
Ankle Booties
With fall comes boots. The newest shape is the ankle boot, which comes in styles ranging from Western, like those in metallic silver by Chanel, to sexy spikes with ribbon laces or suggestive bows, to more casual wedges like those sold at Anthropologie. Pictured here is an interesting hybrid of a bootie/pump displayed at Reiss, in black suede with white patent edging, and skinny tie.
Grunge Revisited
It’s not your ‘90s variety of bland sweatshirt-like cashmere. Rather, the look is infused with ‘80s glitz (think leggings) and sexy accessories. This time around Marc Jacobs shows layers that include shiny fabrics and lush furs. The look is luxe layers with an element of flirt, like this long, chunky cardigan by Tory Burch, belted over a wisp of a dress at Stil. We plan on layering fitted tees with jumpers and leggings this fall, then switching to wool shorts in a subtle plaid, with knit tights, cowl neck sweater, and finished with a long scarf, belted trench, and slouchy boots.
Chains With Charms
Pile ‘em on, in assorted lengths, and be sure you’ve got at least one with some beads, a medallion, and charms in hip motifs, like feathers, crowns, keys or skulls. Catch Keira on the cover of August Elle? There’s a lot of gold out there, but silver or white gold with pavé diamonds work, too. We especially fancy the delicate swords and skulls by Sydney Evans at Intermix. Stash, a sliver of a boutique in Newton Centre, is packed with fabulous picks, including the medley of chains pictured here by local jewelry designer Rachel Brenman.
