Let's Wine & Dine
When it comes to ordering wine at restaurants, some of us are pros, and the rest of us are either slightly overwhelmed or downright clueless. We have our little tricks, like: a) going for the second cheapest wine on the menu (as if this isn't obvious!); b) drinking Pinot Noir exclusively (it must be good if they drank it in "Sideways"); or c) sticking with the same bottle time and time again (if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?). Well, ladies and gentlemen, it's time to educate ourselves. Thanks to Skipjacks, the creative seafood and sushi restaurant with three Boston-area locations, your days of blind wine ordering are numbered. Skipjack's has introduced the Wine Skipper, a sleek, hand held, wireless device (about the size of an Etch-a-Sketch) that simplifies wine decisions by making information about each wine on Skipjack's wine list accessible at your table. The device is delivered to your table along with the hard copy of wine list. From there, you can check out each vineyard's website to learn about flavors and pairing suggestions. With its already impressive commitment to serving great wine - Skipjack's has won The Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence each year since opening in 1986 - the restaurant's new Wine Skipper is a natural progression. The new technology promises to take the mystery out of questions like, "What wine goes with crab cakes and artichokes?" and, what's more, it'll help ensure that you don't embarrass yourself in front of a date or an client - because now you'll be able to order and experiment with confidence. Next thing you know your educated mind and palate will be discovering a whole new world of wines, from Australian Semillon to Argentine Malbec to South African Pinotage. -Anna Gustavson Boardman Wine Tips from Skipjack's President & Owner, Jeff Senior: Best wine to drink with a lobster roll? Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Most underrated/undiscovered wine varietal? Syrah from the U.S. Is Champagne for special occasions or every day? My wife would say every day, but I appreciate it for special occasions. Most popular wine at Skipjacks? Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa. Personal favorite? Aubert Chardonnay from Napa Valley. Aubert is the greatest Chardonnay producer in California right now. This wine is not on our menu, so only people who read getsugar will know to ask about it. General wine advice? Take suggestions for wines that you don't know. There are a lot of great small producers out there that are making terrific wines. If you order only mainstream wines you are missing out on a truly wonderful experience. |
