Weekend Away

Finally, we can expect a long, sunshiny weekend. In true Bostonian fashion, everyone we chatted with had plans to flee the city, most to beachy locales. My plans? I'm off to the Cape, with my newest summer acquisitions. I bought bagfuls of summer staples from J. Crew, including navy-striped flip-flops, the thinnest cotton V-neck sweaters, and a long, emerald-green, strapless cover-up. For my nice outfit, I picked up a Tory Burch top with a brown and turquoise lattice-pattern, and subtle sequins; I still need slim white Capris to pair it with. If I get any fancier invites, I'll wear my Orla Kiely dress from Stila.

Are you going away for the long weekend?
Yes, I'm going to Rochester, New York for a family wedding.

Do you know what you're bringing yet?
Yes, I planned my wardrobe for the whole weekend. I'm wearing [points to a rack next to us] this Milly chiffon, handkerchief-bottom dress to the wedding. I packed jeans and a T-shirt for the night before. And for the morning after brunch, a red and white striped Nanette Lepore jacket over a plain black dress. And of course, I have jewelry planned out for each outfit too.

You're actually packed already? Does it all go in a garment bag?
Everything gets packed into a rolling suitcase so it can go into the overhead compartment on the plane.

What are you doing for the break?
Going to the Cape with my boyfriend.

What will you pack?
Bikini and a pale green embroidered cover-up from Calypso - I hope it's warm enough for the beach. Also, white jeans, belt, sunglasses and flip-flops, plus a sundress, heels, my makeup and hair-dryer.

What was your summer splurge?
I just bought a large multi-pocket Marc Jacobs bag in white leather with gold buckles, from Marc Jacobs on Newbury. I love it.

Mackenzie and Laura, Harvard juniors and roommates

Where are you guys off to for Memorial Day weekend?
We're both going home. It's move-out weekend here; we're packing up our lives 'til next year.

OK, but if you were going away for the weekend...?
Mac: I go to friend's house on the Vineyard sometimes.
Laura: My parents have a house on the beach on the Outer Banks; I'm from North Carolina.

And what do you typically pack?
Laura: I'm casual - shorts, tanks, flip-flops.
Mac: I always pack impractical heels and a dress, plus sunscreen.

Do you do your shopping here in Harvard Square?
Yes, we have to - no car. Usually we go to Urban Outfitters and GAP, sometimes Jasmine Sola.

What was your "it" purchase for the season?
Mac: I always buy shoes after an exam. I just bought the ones I'm wearing at Berk's. [Points down to the metallic bronze braided thong sandals on her feet.] They have wooden kitten-heels, and the insides are cork, so they're really comfortable.
Laura: I bought a scarf. I bring it to the beach; I like how it blows in the wind.
