Sole-Full Summer

This summer's trends showcase plenty of pretty, shiny shoes that are strong, yet feminine, and flirty, yet sturdy. They come in colors like pink and green, with some turquoise and coral thrown in. There are metallics in every shade - gray, bronze, gold, silver, and pearl. Espadrilles are a staple, as are wooden heels and ankle ties. The current rage for ruffles and gathers make a showing in leather; jewels and rhinestones continue to shine; and ballet flats are perfectly pleasing. So take a walk up Newbury and Charles Streets for a summer shoe-shopping extravaganza.

Electric Slide
Although more of a summer staple than an all-out trend, we couldn't ignore this electric orange slide. Created by Gentle Soles, there is flax seed embedded beneath the leather soles, so they mold to your feet like a Tempurpedic pillow. So comfy you'll be tempted to walk right off with them. So long.

Bejeweled
The craze for all bejeweled and bedazzled travels right down to the toes. These thongs, constructed of hearty turquoise-like stones surrounded by sparkly rhinestones are tres European. Pair them with crisp white Capris a halter and oversize sunglasses for a Nicole Richie-eque look. And don't worry, they're a little easier on your wallet than Jimmy Choos.

Parisian Ballet
Who says you must suffer for style? Going on their 40th birthday, French-founded shoe company Arche was created on the premise that although Parisians insist on unwavering chic, they needn't sacrifice comfort. This season's ballet flats are simple, flexible, comfortable and so pretty without any fuss. All four of the metallic shades are a perfect complement to dark rinse straight leg jean. Really, they're the perfect excuse to abandon your bootlegs.

Green With Envy
If you're only buying one pair of shoes this summer, these Patricia Green green metallic, shirred leather, ankle-tie espadrilles are it. They are oh-so hip, incorporating all the trends of the moment, but barely seem as though they're trying. They dress up or down, with trousers, jeans and skirts. Flaunt them day or night.

This Marc Jacobs low, wooden-heeled mule is our most aggressive find. The wood makes them tough, as do the studs along the sides. The green color and pretty center knot softens the look. We like them with jeans, longish, scrunchy skirts, and even khakis for added edge.

Rainbow Dreams
It isn't summer without a preppy pink espadrille. This style has a little more support from its thick slingback and side straps. Throw them in your canvas tote and head to the Islands (that'd be the Vineyard or Nantucket - not the Caribbean).

Flipping Over Flowers
We didn't think we'd flip over the concept of pre-worn shoes, until we spotted these cuties. They're rubber, so you can just hose them down if you're squeamish. Actually, the shoes are all in superb condition, with status labels and right now styles. These preppy, rubber flip-flops by Kate Spade are just the thing to dress up your bikini.

Puddle Jumpers
Given the current conditions around here, we felt compelled to include a rain boot. But skip the stripes and polka dots. These strong stompers, inspired by Asian indoor shoes, are much more comfortable. Plus, they come complete with cozy wool liner.
